It was November 6, 2006, and my depression was so deep that tears fell on page 1287 in my Bible as I read Matthew 4:16.

“the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”

I wrote these words in the margin to the right of this verse: “And what is darker than depression?” Was I immediately healed by the great light? Gloriously no. The year 2007 was one of indescribable horror as the depression clawed itself into the deepest crevices of my mind, will, and emotions. I despaired even of life itself.

Where was God in all this? He was right there with me, using the affliction He did not send to mold me into the Christian He wanted me to be. Of course, I didn’t realize that at the time. I was too wasted. The depression started to lift in the fall of 2007, and I am the Christ follower I am today because of that terrifying experience.

    The verse of Isaiah 64:8 comes to mind: “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and you our potter; and all we are the work of your hand.”
