SIX COMMANDMENTS FOR DYING TO SELF

Gracie May had been a Christian for two years. One day she went to see a deacon at the church she attended to ask a question that was troubling her. The deacon was Paul Chambers. “Mr. Chambers,” she asked, “I know I’m supposed to die to self but have no idea how to do so. Can you give me some particulars?”

“I can,” replied Paul. “It’s nearly impossible to die to self in a general way. Let me show you six commandments I wrote for myself after several mornings spent with the Holy Spirit.”

  1. Thou shalt remain gentle and kind at all times.
  2. Thou shalt not think of thyself unduly.
  3. Thou shalt not always have to be right.
  4. Thou shalt not argue or be defensive.
  5. Thou shalt not take things personally.
  6. Thou shalt not try to be clever unduly.
