IT’S JUST NOT TRUE

Pastor Bill started his sermon by quoting an old saying “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” Several parishioners nodded their heads in agreement. “It sounds comforting, until you are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, lose a spouse, or are afflicted with unending level-8 pain. It’s just not true. God never said he wouldn’t give you more than you can handle. There will be times in your life when you feel like you’re suffocating, there seems no way out, and you don’t know how you can go on for one more day.

“In fact, God does allow difficult situations beyond your capability – so you can rely on Him in all your circumstances, good or bad. He will give you more than you can handle, but He will never give you more than He can handle.

“Think about it. If we can handle anything that comes our way, then why do we need God at all? He wants us to need Him, and desperately so. And how can that better happen than His letting us experience more than we can handle.”

I have heard that saying forever and never gave it much thought. Your post has clarified it. You made an obvious deduction that was not consciously obvious to me, until now. Makes sense.

It wasn’t obvious to me until Pastor Bill’s sermon last Sunday. Like you, I didn’t really think about it too much. It was one of those awakenings that we all need every now and again.
